GLORIFICATION OF VIOLENCE IN INDIAN FILMS SHOCKING

In the present day films, the film makers are portraying violence as an essential element.Owing to this phenomenon,  People in general, and youth in particular, started to think that one would be considered as a hero,if he violently punishes villains,I get disturbed to see that heros are being portrayed as personalities that are against abiding  law & order. What can movie goers learn from this, except emulating these undesirable things and spoiling themselves ? In old films  the leading actors were pious, just and welldispoed , law abiding , and above the board personalities. WHEREAS my observation is,in present time films the personality of male lead is brimming with animosity and aggressiveness, Retaliation as such, has become one of the important personality  traits of male leads.Bizzure outfit, cocksure attitude, spicy jokes towards women and intimidation are some other weapons of heroism,

In the films that were hitting the screens until some two decades ago ,the heros used to win the hearts of their lovers with their outstanding behavior, charity, and with their academic excellence ,Quite contrary to this the present heros are required to kill to win their lovers. What is perplexing is that even the female leads worship the aggression of heros and their violent behavior is cheered by them .

The fragrance of peace ,brotherhood and love must be spread from films.Film makers shouldn't see cinema as a money spinner. They should think it as a medium,to provide inspiring stories for the society

Tirupati Laddu

After the Karnataka 's Nandi Milk ,it's now the turn of Ex-CM of AP Mr JaganReddy government who has been solely blamedfor adulteration of south famous Sri Venkateshwara swamy Prasad Laddus,by the ruling CM ,CBN.It came as shock to the devotees world over, that substandard ingredients animal fat oil, were used in Laddus, which was confirmed  by Gujarat  based Live stock laboratory, More than Laddu it's political wrangling between CBN& Jagan, which has caused severe damage to the sanctity of prasadamand temple.I think it's clearly proved that whole Laddu prasadam episode has come as " varaprasadam " for both Naidu and PK.Instead of directing the TTD to book the supplier of adulterated Ghee ,Both of them are adulterating sentiments of the people with politics, and no wonder CM leading Shanti pariharam while DCM is performing Deeksha in Guntur,The disunity itself proves that both want to take credit for fighting for devotees.

Primafecie ,I have some doubts , .Why didn't the staff mixing ingredients of Laddus get foul smell during it's preparation if it's mixed with animal fat material? Are there proper checks whether fresh stock is supplied or rejected material is again sent with new tags? What roles are being played by all concerned responsible staff to maintain  quality everyday .

Its also surprising to note and find, that AP Govt took nearly two months to make the lab report public .Moreover it's reported that EO TTD had in his press conference during July this year ,upon receiving the said lab report" disclosed"that the Ghee supplied was adulterated with vegetable oil.But now EOafter CM's press-meet ,changed his statement by toeing the CM's line .Perhaps ruling clique wants to shoot two birds at one shot I.e. character assassination of Jagan inaddition to nailing the previous TTD board .

Now even Central Govt also is saying that it should  be handed over to CBI,but I totally disagree with it, as CBI is a " caged parrot " in the hands of centre as per the averments of the top courts.,and if you go by the statement of Jagan on this episode, says that important persons from BJP' s top brass are also involved in purchasing/ quality matters etc,so CBI' credibility could be compromised. Better a retired HC judge should probe this matter to establish truth

The Evolution of Rahul Gandhi

IT may be premature to assess Rahul Gandhi' s affectiveness as new leader of the opposition ,but according to many ,including myself,  his initial performance is very promising..After winning the recent LokSabha polls Rahul has been confident and strong both inside and outside the house which is appropriate for an opposition leader. Our great BJP leaders including the top leadership used to mock Rahul as " pappu" and " entitled dynast" staged a remarkable come back in 2024 general election. He became central figure of INDIA alliance that successfully penetrated into BJP stronghold particularly UP,AS heir to renowned Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty Mr Rahul led two nationwide marches ( Bharat jodo etc) against what he termed Modi's politics of hate and fear, revitalizing his party and redefining his own image.
The results of the latest general election significantly boosted his morale, prompting people to view him seriously as leader.Infact he is now recognized as a leader focused on real -life issues- such as unemployment, Women's safety, Manipur violence, NEET Exam paper leaks, rising prices of gas cylinders ,petrol& diesel, caste related issues etc ,Most importantly he is seen as the one who will uphold the spirit of secularism. These factors have collectively reshaped public perception of Rahul .
If you recall ,it's highly commendable that as Leader of the opposition,he posted the following tweet""Winning and loosing happens in life ,I urge every one to refrain from using derogatory language and being nasty towards Smt SmritiIrani or any other leaderfor that matter,Humiliating people is a sign of weakness, not strength " Even if the appeal draws attention of media and public ,every leader including top in BJP needs to follow his appeal ,ITS that a large number of our PM's followers use very abusive language .Whoever is handling PM's social media platform should make sure they are unfollowed.Recently Mrs Smriti Irani also started praising Rahul , Still it's shameful to note the comments of BJP IT cell Chief Amit Malavya, calling Rahul Gandhi's comments as disingenuous  speaks volumes of the mindset of BJP leaders .Rahul Gandhi stood taller by his comments and showed greatness and good gesture.
Rahul's success will depend on his political planning  as he missed some opportunities in past like becoming Minister in MMS cabinet, or strengthening congress party as it's President etc His belief in power of LOP to raise it's voice in parliament gives hope and optimism to the party

"ONE NATION AND ONE ELECTION "

One nation, one election is key item on BJP's agenda and was a part of it's manifesto for 2024 election Loksabha polls. This idea itself is more a reflection of the BzjP leadership's desperation to assert itself after a series of recent policy reversals due to pressure from a rejuvenated opposition and resistance from it's own allies. But on careful examination I found , except the cost factor, there's no other point worth considering, Simultaneous Elections in diverse and populous country like India raise significant concerns .AS such, election is an opportunity for the people to demonstrate their democratic sanctioned resentment over the policies and programs of the government, People exercising this right to ventilate their agreement or disagreement over the governments in the centre or state shouldn't  be curtailed just to avoid expenses. THE EXPectations of the people beingstate specific in assembly Elections and nation specific in parliament Elections ,there's possibility of either of them getting swayed by the general mood.Possobility of holding Elections in massive way is not practically feasible. HAVE we not seen the inability of ECI
to hold Elections in few states at one stroke? EVEN today the ECI is not able to hold Elections to Maharashtra along with J&K, HP.Even Elections to the state assmbliesare held in multiple slots. We have also seen Commission rendered helpless to deal properly with violationsreported during last general Elections.
Coalition and subsequent collapse of governments in multipurpose system in India are not uncommon in various states.Under new poll plan ,there could be more political meddling.. Logistics , security concerns and risk of undermining regional issues are critical challenges, Moreover it's generally believed that clubbing of assembly & parliament will put BJP in an advantageous position. For many regional parties this could swell
disaster as they risk being overshadowed by national dynamics favouring BJP. IN Acountry as diverse as India where regional identities and local issues often play a crucial role in Elections, a unified national election could lead to centralisation of political Power leaving regional voices marginalised. As such, the Union Cabinet's approval for " one nation ," one election"is at best an attempt by BJP to build a narrative for the introduction of Presidential system while the opposition called it as an impractical idea which goes against the federal principles, the constitution, and democracy

Terrorism in J&K

In the last 2 years nearly more than 50 of brave soldiers lost their lives in encounters with terrorists in J&K . The unending issue of terrorism in Kashmir since independence is not able to be to extinguished  by successive governments and of course BJP is no exception. The emerging pattern is particularly alarming as it flies in the face of the centre’s claim that terror activities have come down since abrogation of Article 370 , ending the special status to J&K . Infact several areas in Jammu have seen a surge in terror strikes since 2021. The Doda  encounter came a week after Kathua tragedy when5 soldiers were killed in an ambush. The Jammu region, known for its peaceful atmosphere has been shaken in the recent months. In an Editorial yesterday “ Terror in J&K : will PM walk the Talk”? was very apt . We recall BJP’s election slogan that POK will be restored in India in six months time after assuming 3.0 charge . Possibility looks bleak and obscure .

The Supreme court's judgement quashing the order of the Gujrat Govt's order granting permission to 11 rapist-murderers who were sentenced to life imprisonment for their crime in 2002 does two things simultaneously-it exposes the patronage the criminals of the worst order can expect to get in India, and it compels every Indian to remain hopeful about the institutions of democracy. IT also gives people a chance to reassure themselves that fortitude of one person still has space in this country to fight her war and take it to it's logical conclusion.

It's fitting that Mrs Bilkis has got justice and overall the verdict reposes the faith of the people of India still have in the judiciary. AS SUCH Bilkis's tragedy went beyond injustice. SHE was 21 years , pregnant,  gangraped in  front of her three year old  daughter during the Gujarat program in 2002 .IN those clashes Bano's 14of her relatives, including the daughter were murdered as a "" grotesque and diabolical crime driven by commual hatred ""..Of course 11 persons were sentenced to life after prolonged trial in a CBI court  later approved by Gujarat HC.But surprisingly these 11 persons were given remission and freed on 15th Aug 2022 when the nation was celebrating 75th Independence Day .Moreover those given remission were given rousing welcome by VHP, RSS etc as if they were jailed for a good cause .
The top court has asserted the tenets of humanity and equality at a time when these are becoming rare .Though SC's verdict is welcome in this case the bench 's view that convicts suppressed the  material facts to obtain the earlier verdict is bizarre. DID the earlier bench gloss over the moot questions which were raised this time around? ITS CRYSTAL clear that the process at Gujarat HC went awry
Mrs Bano's tragedy went beyond injustice. IT scared the nation's soul and mocked the  's the wounds inflicted on the nation's conscience .However the top court's decision will hopefully heal the wounds inflicted on the nation's conscience

Arab-Israel war

The Palestine- Israel conflict is a stark reminder of the unequal power dynamics at play in our world. It resembles a battle  between an ant & an elephant with Palestine representing the vulnerable ant while Israel mighty elephant .

Palestine, a tiny and feeble nation is courageously  fighting to free it's illegally occupied  land from cluches of Israel with unwavering support from USA& UK .While actions like Aqsa Torrent mosque desecration which is a symbol of oppression being faced by Palestine, had damaged to the already besieged Gaza strip and it's essential  to understand that the struggle is driven by the right cause and supported by those who have been victims of this extreme  brutality for the past about seven decades .
The primary cause of this conflict traces  back to 1946 when Israel was established.A small portion of Palestine was allocated as Israel by western powers.Since then Israel has continued to occupy most of the territory confining Palestine to a miniscule part.
The conflict, characterised by decades of violence, territorial disputes and political tensions continues to pose a significant threat to regional stability and regional peace .Israel has been dragging it's feet on question of Palestinian  statehood while it continues with the occupation and settlements leaving Palestine with no glimmer of hope .The west &US to continues to look the other way in connection  with Israel's gross rights violations.
THAT Hamas launched an attack on Israel is not entirely unexpected given Israel's oppression of the Palestine people US decries attack on Israel ,Egypt calls for restraint,  Iran backs Hamas .The paradox being US opposes Russian invasion of Ukraine but ignores occupation of Palestine territory. Every stake holder in this conflict sees an opportunity in this ` War', Israel wants to expand it's territory, Iran which has always shared a hostile relationship with Israel ,seems to want to prevent normalisation of Israel -Saudi ties, while US wants to support Israel since the latter is the linchpin of it's middle east strategy ,Whats curious is that India's condolences are always one sided

Arab-Israel war

The situation in Gaza Strip is terribly disturbing but who is responsible for the present situation? THE Gazans are now paying the price for the folly and mindless acts of Hamas and are reduced to the status of helpless lambs to be slaughtered at the whims of Islam's jihadis who care two hoots about the loss of lives of women& children in the ongoing reprisal by Israel. To start With Hamas did the cruelest harakiri that Israel couldn't think of and as a follow up the latter is doing a great disservice to humanity as a whole.

The Israeli military's order for one million Palestinian people to relocate to North Gaza within 24 hours is a heartbreaking display of humanity. For half of the population in such a small area to be forced to move helter-skelter like desperate immigrants is a stain on our shared idea of civility. While the attack by Hamas on Israel is deplorable, Israel's retaliatory actions in Gaza are equally distressing. In this connection, it may be noted that a striking feature among the three latest wars- namely, Russia Ukraine, Armania-Azerbaijan, &Israel-- Palestine,-is the targeted killing of the civilian population. The long-drawn Ukraine war doesn't show signs of ending soon. And now a new outbreak of war in West Asia makes it imperative for global leaders to reset their their international priorities. THE economies of the world would be dented if the two parallel wars continued.
This is the greatest tragedy despite the world spending huge funds to run the UNO and quite a few other bodies to ensure the peaceful coexistence of people from various countries. However, the UN should have already taken steps to broker peace in the area. Its formation was primarily intended to prevent wars, protect human rights, and promote stability and peace in the world. Unfortunately, it has fallen short of achieving these objectives and instead has become a battleground for capitalist and communist powers led by the US & Russia, China, etc.

Demonetisation-Court verdict

The Govt and its supporters must have heaved a sigh of relief over the Supreme Court ‘sverdict supporting Modi’s 2016 demonetisation move .Though there won’t be effect even it were declared illegal,as the note ban is a closed chapter .The Govt’s act would have remained an illegal and illogical act in history, had it been declared otherwise. As such ,SC only upheld the legality of the Centre’s decision on Demonetisation and SC only looked into the process butit didn’t say whether the stated objectives were met or not.Iam of the considered opinion that it would be fallacious if NDAtreats the SC’s verdict on Demonetisation as some kind of political victory worthy of using it as an electoral weapon. However the court’s postfacto ruling is only of academic interest at this juncture and shouldn’t be interpreted as a judicial endorsement of the success of note ban which an EX-Minister was claiming .Infact entire country has endured enormous pain and suffering because of the ill-conceived and hastily implemented idea which proved to a spectacular disaster ,disrupting the economy and throwing millions out of jobs.

While giving notification under RBI Act (26(2))Govt allowed 52 day period to exchange the banned notes, during which serpentine queues were common infront of nationalised banks across the country .About 200 people died due to prolonged wait before the banks.Nearly 15 crore people including petty traders ,casual labourersand thosewho are working with MSMES had suffered a lot with this sudden banning. It was felt by the people that this was undertaken to create an atmosphere through which the Assembly Elections could be won by BJP especially in UP in2017, One can never forget the pressure in the banking staff ; a few died ,some had to compensate money from their pockets ,sitting for very long hours .On theother hand the Govt couldn’t achieve its objectives for banning which included, controlling black money ,terror financing ,fake currency and promotion of digitalised transactions. Is it not a fact that Govt failed to curb black money as RS 15.31 lakh crores out of estimated black money of RS 15.41 lakh crores returned to bank ?Further there was 3 fold or 260% rise in  circulation of currency in this 7 years. In this backdrop its very unfortunate to hear from the apex court that there was no flaw legally . As I know , BJP and its supporters very well know the ground reality and must never indulge in such folly in future .Yesterday’s verdict by SCwas only to see the legality and constitutionality behind the Govt’s move , not Demonetisation per se

Growing friction between Judiciary & Executive

This is with reference to an English Daily Editorial Dt 9 th Dec,” Growing friction” between Judiciary & Executive, with regards to serious comments made by VicePresident of India Mr Jagdeep Dhankhar ,in his maiden speech in the Rajyasabha, over the issue of Appointment of Judges to the HCs& SCs, which reflects widening gap between Judiciary & Executive ,which could have been avoided.Normally when a person enters high office they prefer to say nice things and accommodative ,.platitudes rather than barbed comments are heard on the first day .This is second time in two weeks that Mr Dhankhar has raised the issue of “ judges appointments” and criticised the  Supreme court .Afew weeks ago Minister for Law& Justice Mr Kiran Rijiju, described the Colligium system as “ opaque” .He said when judges select judges there’s politics .The centre and the apex court have been on collision course with each taking potshots at the other over contentious issue .While Judiciary has been complaining about the delay in clearing the appointments, the government has been consistently raising objections over the functioning of collegium. The conflict if not resolved emicably,it could threaten the institutional balance and adversely impact the justice delivery system .As such Mr Dhankhar, it looks is yet to shed his belligerence that he exhibited in Kolkata as Governor of WB,.He became a thorn in CM Mamtha ‘s side ,incessantly slating her government and its actions. Its widely believed that he has been rewarded for his bellicosity. At any rate ,his elevation may have inspired other Governors to become more aggressive; one example is Kerala Governor ,But Dhankhar must realise that his statements will now be highlighted and scrutinised much more than earlier. He could have avoided criticism of SC in strong words. Some of the measures adopted by the government in selecting the individuals to head the constitutional bodies is questionable.Unlike the earlier CJ I ,who was perceived to be close to the government, the present CJI is more inclined to take mattersheadon.

In the instant case by echoing the government’s position on an important issue VP has not presented himself as an impartial chairman of Rajyasabha who could hope to enjoy bipartisan support in the House. This is unfortunate.

“FEARLESS IN OPPOSITION “ book by Mr P Chidambaram

Today I have finished reading the book “Fearless in opposition “ containing most incisive Essays published in Indian Express in2016 , written by Mr P Chidambaram who headed Union Home , Finance & Commerce Ministries,

The book mainly deals with what’s the BJP’s definition of nationalism ? Why did UPA Govt follow the policy of “strategic restraint “? How has surgical strike on currency resulted in difficulties for millions of people? These are few contentious issues that Mr Chidambaram analysed in this book.

Dr C Rangarajan ExRBI Governor wrote “In impeccable prose Mr Chidambaram presents a scholarly survey of the events which jolted the economy and polity in2016, tracing their origins and offering answers to them”

Displaying clarity of thought attention to detail and deep understanding of facts , he makes invaluable suggestions on numerous vexed issues . “ Fearless in opposition “ is as much a show case of Mr P Chidambaram’s impeccable writing skills . Those who do not like Mr Chidambaram especially with saffron orientation, they may not like this post at all but that’s OK , it doesn’t matter for me , and I would say it’s an excellent book one has to read .

Fuel prices are sky high and price with certain additives crossed an unprecedented Rs.100 mark in some cities, of MP, forcing many petrol pumps to shut down as their old analogue fuel dispensing machines were not designed to show a three-digit figure. Its neighbour Maharashtra would soon knock the three-digit figures and states like AP, TS, Karnataka etc could soon follow Maharashtra in joining the Rs 100/ per litre petrol club.

In Hyderabad, I notice many families whose breadwinners are working in the private sector have faced salary cuts due to Covid19, and the continuous rise in petrol and LPG prices is, in turn, making other basic commodities beyond the reach of salaried class and particularly the poor. Since the opposition is weak, it doesn’t mean the ruling party can take people for granted while selectively making Assam Govt cut down the petrol prices, the reason everyone knows, ELECTIONS. While in opposition as CM of Gujarat our Hon’ble PM slammed the then PM, MMS, several times for frequently increasing the fuel prices, and how Mrs Smrithi Irani used to behave those days for this very reason, many would remember I hope.

The stance of the BJP on fuel prices has been quite paradoxical. While it demanded higher fuel subsidies when it was in opposition to protect consumers from higher global fuel prices when the crude oil price was as high as $110 US, a barrel. On May 16th 2014 when NDA came to power the price of petrol in Delhi was Rs 71.41 per litre, when the global price for crude oil was US $106 a barrel, to this, crude oil now stands at around US$55 a barrel, which is almost half of the price of 2014.

As BJP is in power in many states, what’s stopping it from becoming a trailblazer and also a role model for non-BJP states? Our great FM washed off her hands on this issue of rising fuel prices is befuddling  While it’s strange that our PM was blaming UPA after 7 years of being in power, for this unprecedented hike, and we have great people who only thump the desks, in support of it. Please note that during the run-up to the elections, how was the government capable of reigning the prices despite a rise in crude oil prices?

Faulty and unfair system of taxation by centre & states is the cause of the abnormal rise in fuel prices. The Centre has gradually increased the taxes on fuel and the fluctuations in crude oil prices compel oil companies to increase fuel prices. It is ironic that while the government is determined to place an intolerable burden on the poor, it is reluctant to tax profits earned by the super-rich. Undoubtedly oil is a cash cow for the government. Finally, Agriculture is a state subject. So why has the centre arrogated states power and got itself mired in an intractable controversy? When will the BJP walk the talk?

The decision of the central government to observe the birthday of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose on 23rd Jan as ”parakram divas”. I think it's only a political stunt with an eye on the ensuing Assembly elections of West Bengal. And if someone thinks it otherwise, I leave it to their wisdom. On the face of it, one would consider it a matter of great pride and patriotism though belated. Strictly speaking, Netaji was born in Cuttak, Orissa, then in Bengal Presidency Of British India. While Didi led TMC and BJP led NDA are in tandem on the issue of celebrating of Netaji's birthday. But the bone of contention is the nomenclature, Central Govt wants to call it as “Parakram Divas” the state’s TMC Govt with All India Forward Block wants it to be called “Desh Premi Divas” and both TMC&FB, are miffed with the Centre for not consulting them.

If someone thinks that it is not a move to appease voters of West Bengal, then also I will leave it to their wisdom as it is an individual perception. With West Bengal Elections are on cards, especially when it comes to the birth anniversary of Netaji, no party wants to let the opportunity to lure the voters to slip from its hands. And it’s quite reasonable to accept the truth that Central Govt had no time to remember Netaji in the last 6/7 years from the day it came to power. But I feel the people of Bengal are shrewd enough not to fall into such traps and vote judiciously based on work done and schemes floated by Govt.

The regional party’s leaders have gone so far as to claim that it was a “stunt “by NDA keeping in mind the forthcoming Assembly Elections, and” not a mark of respect “to Netaji. Its also reported that the family members of Netaji also put their weight behind TMC’ s, “Desh Premi Divas” but they also said “ we are happy with the announcement. “

But the bottom line remains that true respect and honest tributes to Netaji had been if both Governments had joined hands to celebrate 125th birthday anniversary of one India’s greatest sons who strove to free India from the British Iron clutches and rather than quibbling over Netaji’s event the governments should have celebrated the event together if both are so generous and magnanimous.

With the failure of 9th round of talks between Centre and farmers Unions,  both sides have agreed to resume discussions on 19th Jan, in a bid to break the deadlock over three contentious farm laws. The end to farmers agitation is not in sight. The Supreme Court waded into a delicate situation, which is being watched by the world.  Even though the government and the farmers were not seeking its help and yet the Court stepped in any way and held the three laws in abeyance. Though it’s not cutting any ice, as the farmers demand repeal of laws. And the Supreme Court should have concerned itself about the question of the constitutionality of the farm laws.

Appointment of the committee is an extra-parliamentary method to settle the debate over laws is worrisome. The court is not only undermining the legislative but also the nation's faith in a representative democracy. It is hard to see how the court-appointed committee can come up with an amicable solution. As such, the verdict of appointment of a committee of Experts has not resolved the standoff. Farmers have refused to end the agitation and cooperate with the so-called Expert committee and it has only widened the scope of the dirty politics. Let it be the purview of the government, not the Supreme Court to rule the country. The Govt should learn a lesson from this verdict that laws shouldn’t be enacted in haste and must be done after convincing all the stakeholders. The centre and states must work in tandem for the progress of the country. It's a wonder that this government especially since it came to power, announced all important issues unilaterally, in haste by taking things for granted because of brute majority in Lok Sabha.

As per the Supreme Court, the committee it has constituted will hear all sides and help the apex court understand whether the farm laws are in “public interest.” This self-given assignment is outside the top court’s remit, as its job is to determine the constitutionality or otherwise of legislation, not whether it’s in the public interest. That's for the people to decide. Here for the sake of the record, all the four experts are strongly pro-Govt on the Agri-laws. Instead of being an honest broker, the court may be courting disdain.

For conducting negotiations, the members ought to and should be known to have an open mind on core issues which alone will create confidence in the parties concerned.  The validity of the laws can only be decided after proper hearing of the recommendation of the committee.

Therefore bringing in a committee of known views amounts to constitutional abdication and farmers have rightly refused to appear before it. Howsoever powerful the court may be, there are always limits to its power.

Indian Coronavirus immunization process has drawn a lot of curiosity, controversy, questions and anxieties. And at the stage when a new wave of attack of the mutant virus is looming large, I wonder if the disease is fatal or the misinformation surrounding it. Keeping greater welfare in mind  -- the government needs to curb over ambitiousness and the opposition should also refrain from questioning every move just for the sake of doing so.

Many experts have expressed their concerns over hasty approval of these vaccines despite not having the complete data of Phase 3 trails.

The scope of for apprehension is, one fails to understand the terms “restricted use” ” Emergency use” and also clarification of Union Health Minister that recipients will be tracked, and monitored as if they are on trial. Such disclaimers could dampen the euphoria generated over the approval to the much-awaited vaccines. The rhetoric that this domestic vaccine is “India’s pride” and “ decisive turning point in the war on Corona” and the Govt and its machinery is chanting the same. A section of naysayers feels that failure of Govt to tackle Covid Pandemic and keep the economy from further deteriorating into crisis is a foregone conclusion. It would be unethical to see the Covaxin vaccine as a weapon by covering-up the complete information related to it.  The Govt’s irresponsible attitude could be the reason for the controversy over Covaxin. While 26 thousand volunteers had to be tested, but so far only 23 thousand have been tested. The third phase of those experiments will take 2 to 10 months to come to fruition. How did the subject matter committee of the central Drug Control Agency approve it in the meantime without waiting, is anybody’s guess?

Why this hurry? Is the Govt trying to score some brownie points by following the suit of a few western countries have approved some vaccines? It would be assuring if the government also makes the public aware of the reactions that can be expected after the vaccination.

To instil confidence the first vaccine must be given “live” on TV to the President Of India, the PM, and the Health Minister and opposition leaders who are toeing the government line. Observing their post-vaccine health condition will enable greater success.

In other countries, top political leaders including the US President-Elect and the VicePresident -Elect have taken jab in public to inspire confidence among people.

The current farmer agitation is one of the major protests.  It is an unprecedented protest which includes the participation of 12 million farmers and 14 million truck drivers.

It is a matter of great public concern that many rounds of talks and the seize around the nations capital borders have remained inconclusive.   Many national celebrities from various fields have decided to return their state honours in a show of solidarity with the agitating farmers. The farmers fear that the gains of the new farm laws would not percolate down to them.  And have expressed fears they may lose their negotiating power to the large corporates.

By pushing these laws in haste, the Government has lost out on the virtues of consensus.  It could have ensured the acceptance of its policies had it addressed the angst of the farmers.

The central Government claims that farmers will have unfettered freedom to sell their produce at higher prices in any market in India hereafter under the new legislation but the farmers fear of corporates dictating procurement terms is not altogether unfounded. With the dismantling of APMC Mandi’s and the government having no power to keep a watchful eye on the deals being struck between farmers and traders, there seems to be a greater possibility of farmers being exploited by the heavy cartelised corporate giants. Also, state governments stand to lose the revenue from the APMCs which fund the various farmers-related Welfare measures. The farmers proved that they cannot be fooled easily. And that they are aware of the nexus between the government and these corporates. Farmers feel that the major benefactors of these farm bills will Adani and Ambani's, who are known to be quite friendly with Prime Minister Modi and the ruling dispensation.  Adani, for that matter, is an expert in using political connections for business advantages. He also did that in Australia in ways that made the public put up placards saying “stop Adani.” India is different since Modi came to power. Adani's net worth increased 121% per cent to more than $26 billion by getting government tenders to build infrastructure projects.

The unloved question here is how to ensure that the reforms do not lead to monopoly or cartelisation. Equally important is the issue of federalism as Agriculture as such, is a state subject. The states play a crucial role in this sector, but they have been scarcely involved in the passing of agriculture laws.

Farmers have always borne the brunt of the natural calamities like floods, drought. And they labour endlessly in inclement weather. It's a pity that these annadatas themselves have to sit on roads to get their voice heard.

According to the Global Hunger Index 2020, India ranks 94th among 107 countries, in terms of hunger and continues to be in the “severe” hunger category. This index is also an indicator of the poor human development of the country. Now, India is behind most of its south-Asian neighbours, including Bangladesh. Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Pakistan ranked 75, 78, 88 respectively, are also in the same category but are above India. Nepal ranked 73rd and Srilanka 64th are better off and are in “moderate” hunger category.
Many factors contribute to India’s “severe” hunger and the other hand the collective net worth of half of nation’s 100 richest people on 2020 Forbes India Rich list saw a rise of 14%. Sensex, an Index Of 30 companies actively trading on Bombay Stock Exchange, used to observe “the overall growth, Development Of particular industries, ups and downs of the Indian Economy closed at 38,673 points on March 31st 2018. One needs to consider all these, along with data released with the National Statistical Office, which shows that the Economic growth slumped to 11year low of 4.2 per cent in 2019-20. One school of thought holds that the rise in wealth-despite Corona -inflicted downturn-was partly due to the cut in corporate taxes from 35% to 25% last year. If you see the GHI, India is just better than Afghanistan among all south-Asian neighbours. Instead Of concentrating on religion, etc. Our policymakers need to wake to the reality of the situation and adopt a convergent approach to tackle this problem faced by our country.
The problem of hunger both in urban and rural areas should be tackled differently, as numerous factors contribute to this” severe” hunger status. There is a lack of stable employment, due to frequent migration, many have not registered with the system and hence do not receive the required benefits, not to forget the poor public distribution system. It’s advisable to have an autonomous PDS based on community-led procurement and storage. There is also a need to hold negotiations between centre and states on food and nutrition security measures and India needs to reevaluate its economic reform strategy and consider course correction to feed the hungry and create opportunities for gainful employment.

I read a newspaper editorial titled ”Disastrous Disinvestment policy” which decries the move to disinvest profit-making public sector enterprises. A closer look at the PSUs on the chopping block reveals the flawed thinking on the part of the Govt whose only objective appears to be to handover profit-making state-owned companies to the favoured corporate groups. The government has failed the public sector by too much interference, reducing the autonomy of the management in respect of pricing, employment, purchases and marketing etc. If you recall, the dismantling of PSUs under the guise of disinvestment began during NDA1, which ended up disinvesting 7 PSUs, and the present dispensation has disinvested as many as 23 PSUs disregarding the interests of agitating employees. It is ironic that our PM who claims to have sold tea on Railway platform, during his childhood, should be contemplating to sell the very same Railways.  And I also feel, it’s preposterous to privatise LIC, an iconic organisation which is the pride of India with over 40 crores policyholders, having assists worth 30 lakh crores? Yes, its a fact that there are some inherent problems, like excess workforce, obsolete technology, inefficiency, lack of accountability etc. The public sector as such, is nobody’s baby, competition from the private sector, politically influenced unions. In my opinion, the burning problems of poverty and unemployment cannot be addressed without due support from the public sector. The government needs to change its policy on PSUs from disinvestment to revival and sell only those enterprises which cannot be revived at all. It also warrants a re-look at the move to sell of PSUs to raise resources. There is also an urgent need to strengthen the independence and autonomy of PSU boards.

Bihar witnessed 52.24% turn out, in the first phase of Assembly Election, seems that people have voted wholeheartedly despite the ongoing pandemic, which itself is a sign of vibrant democracy. Bihar elections are no litmus test either for BJP-JDU combine, or LJP or even Mahagatbandhan, because each party has failed Bihar in every possible way. Nitish, who like a trapeze artist jumped from Lalu’s swing to catch BJP rope in time, made a mockery of the mandate. BJP shamelessly accepted the bait and went on to govern as if they are elected to rule.

If you see the trend of the campaign, vast crowds are turning out to attend the public meetings addressed by RJD’s Tejaswi Yadav in a clear indication that the young leader has captured the imagination of Bihar electorate. People’s response to such rallies enables us to see which way the wind is blowing. His promise to create 10 lakh new jobs, seems to have galvanised the youth. In contrast, Nitish turned out to be faring poorly in every way. He made booze ban his main plank. Of late his government has been facing flak over its handling of pandemic, particularly in the wake of the return of the lakhs of migrant workers to the state and resultant rise in unemployment and rural distress. The widespread damage caused by floods has further added to the woes.

Narendra Modi Ji has conveniently skirted his failure to fulfil the promise of special state status, and special package for state and establishment of a central university in Bhagalpur made in the run-up to 2015 Assembly Elections. As such Bihar is at the bottom of the pyramid of economic indicators, while Nitish being the CM of the state for 15 years, so he cannot blame Congress as usual for their failures, at least in this case.

Lok Jan Shakti‘s Chirag Paswan’s open hostility towards Nitish, and his idolisation of Modi Ji highlight that some moves in the game of politics are at times beyond our comprehension, as Lalu, the patriarch of RJD is in Ranchi jail, while veteran Sharad Yadav has been suffering from ill-health, and a prominent Dalit leader Ramvilas Paswan died recently. Their heirs seem to have not just taken over the reins but have also taken over the narrative this time. The LJP which has a strong Dalit support base, reiterated support to Modiji, while fielding candidates against JDU, has lent its credence to the argument that it was part of saffron party’s long term strategy to edge out Nitish.

As such Bihar being a politically significant state and the election results are bound to have a significant impact on the course of national political scenario.we may have wait for the remaining schedule to be finished to come to some conclusion
